Pre-Op Instructions
Preparing properly for your spine procedure helps ensure the safest experience and the best possible outcome. Once your surgery is scheduled, our clinical team will review your personalized pre-operative plan in detail, but the following general guidelines apply to most patients:
- Please notify us of all medications and supplements you are taking.
- Certain medications—including blood thinners, anti-inflammatories, and some diabetes medications—may need to be paused as instructed by your surgeon.
- Inform us immediately if you develop a fever, respiratory symptoms, illness, or any new medical concerns before surgery.
- Complete all required imaging, labs, and clearances prior to your procedure date.
- Arrange reliable transportation, as you will not be able to drive yourself home.
- Do not eat or drink after the cutoff time provided during your surgical scheduling call.
- Arrive at the surgical center at the exact time provided.
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
- Bring a list of medications, your ID, insurance information, and any required paperwork.
Post-Op Instructions
After surgery, you will receive a customized recovery plan designed to support healing and help you return to activity safely and efficiently.
- Walking is encouraged as soon as you are cleared—it promotes circulation and speeds recovery.
- Avoid heavy lifting, bending, twisting, or strenuous exercise until otherwise directed.
- Follow specific mobility guidelines tailored to your procedure (microdiscectomy, laminectomy, cervical fusion, etc.).
- Keep your incision clean and dry.
- Do not submerge the incision in water until cleared.
- Contact us immediately if you experience drainage, increasing redness, fever, or worsening pain.
- Most minimally invasive procedures require very limited pain medication.
- Use prescribed medications only as directed.
- Ice and over-the-counter pain relievers may be recommended based on your procedure and health profile.
- Your first postoperative visit will occur within the timeframe provided before surgery.
- Imaging or physical therapy may be recommended based on your recovery progress. Our surgeons and care team remain available throughout your healing process to ensure a safe, smooth, and predictable recovery.
